Ostracods The marine taxa belong all to the superorder Myodocopa, the other two superorders, Podocopa and Palaeiocopa, include respectively most freshwater, benthic and interstitial species, and a single living family, Puniciidae. The ostracods, although widespread over the Planet, are little known in Italy. Moreover, the few available data relate only to some regions of North Italy, Sardinia and Apulia; for the other regions, Sicily included, there are no or very doubtful data, and this lack of adequate information is remarked by the scattered papers treating both surface and groundwater ostracods of Italy (Klie, 1938; Danielopol, 1981; Ghetti & McKenzie,1981; Fox, 1966).
